“Our university is committed to walking the path of truth and reconciliation and to supporting a greater understanding of Indigenous ways of thinking and knowing. On Saturday, Sept. 30, students are invited to gather and observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at events on our Fredericton and Saint John campuses.”
1. Fredericton
In Fredericton, the day will begin at 9:15 a.m. with the raising of the Wabanaki Confederacy and Wolastoqey Nation flags in front of Sir Howard Douglas Hall. Following the flag-raising, a ceremony will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER.
2. Saint John
In Saint John, the 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ceremony will be livestreamed to our Saint John campus’ Ganong Hall Lecture Theatre. After the ceremony, there will be a healing walk with the City of Saint John in Rockwood Park. For more information on the healing walk, please email t.ross@unb.ca.
3. Join the Live Stream
Those not able to attend in person in Fredericton or Saint John can view the ceremony via livestream.
4. How students can be involved
Students are encouraged to wear orange T-shirts at the events on Sept. 30 and to campus in Fredericton and Saint John on Friday, Sept. 29. As an expression of our strides toward a better tomorrow, we encourage students to place an orange heart in their residence windows to honour the lives of the children who never returned home.
Students can pick up an orange heart at the following locations:
Saint John: Office of the Registrar (Oland Hall 132)
Fredericton: Registrar’s Office | Security Office | Student Services
Additional information, including support resources, is available on the UNB webpage for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
